From Self-Discovery to Sustainability: A Journey at Tamera Youth Camp

The 2024 Youth Camp in Tamera (July 22-31) was a special and inspiring experience. Thirty young people, ages 14 through 18, gathered at the Place of the Children to explore themselves and their relationships, and had the possibility to deepen on one specific topic – masculinity, love, creativity, water or cooking. Each participant also joined a mixed “family” for daily tasks and intimate conversations. This year’s camp was a dynamic blend of familiar and new faces, enriching our experience with diverse perspectives. The camp was a  phone- and drug-free time, which was reflected upon by the youth as very enriching.

Highlights and Subgroup Work

Water Group (Facilitated by Simon and Silvio):

In the Water Group we explored simple, low-tech solutions for wastewater treatment with Brazilian expert Guilherme Castagna. We learned about creating “rich water” and its benefits for sustainability. Hands-on work led to the completion of a new water system at the Place of the Children, which will transform the area into a lush fruit garden.

Creativity Group (Facilitated by Cynthia and Fay):

Our journey in the Creativity Group began at the lake with a reflective writing workshop, where participants crafted love letters to themselves, which were shared and expanded upon by others. We then moved to the Art Mountain for body painting, creating a visual representation of our connections with hearts and a red line. We ended with self-portraits and a session of mutual appreciation, culminating in a final presentation where the love letters and the red line (now white) highlighted our creative and emotional growth.

New Masculinity – Anti-Heroes (Facilitated by Ludwig and David):

The Anti-Heroes group examined modern masculinity, challenging traditional notions of heroism. Activities included eye-gazing exercises, consensual long hugs and a hike to “Pego das Pias,” where participants faced challenges and supported each other in making authentic choices. The focus was on vulnerability, cooperation, and self-discovery.

Love School (Facilitated by Laura and Anita):

The Love School explored the topics of love and sexuality. Participants created collages, discussed intimate questions, and engaged in body painting to celebrate their unique beauty. The group expressed their reflections and insights through poetry and spoken word during the final presentation, highlighting personal and political empowerment.

Cooking Group (Facilitated by Luca):

The Cooking Group, focused on sustainable cooking and healthy nutrition. They learned about eco-friendly food preparation and visited Tamera’s Solar Village and gardens, gaining practical insights into sustainable living.

Special Events

The camp featured several key events that enriched our experience. We began with an introduction to Tamera at the Akron, where long-time project members were interviewed, providing a profound spiritual perspective. A screening of “Water is Love,” complemented by a visit from the water expert Indra Singh, highlighted the importance of water sustainability. A beach day included trust-building exercises, and the Love School Day, led by Dara and Laura, featured a visit to the Oracle Spring and explored themes of love and intimacy. The camp also included an alcohol-free party with blind dancing, several Forums for deep sharing, and a Matinee on Sunday with an inspiring talk by Sabine Lichtenfels.

Final Presentation

The camp concluded with a memorable final presentation on July 30th, organized as a “wandering theater.” The subgroups showcased their creative work in various stations, followed by a show by the lake with a stunt fight and performances in the Pagode, creating a moving and joyful atmosphere.

Conclusion

The 2024 Youth Camp in Tamera was a tremendous success. The deep connections, creative expressions, and meaningful conversations enriched us all. We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone involved— youth, team, Tamera residents, and guests—who made this special time possible. We eagerly anticipate the next Youth Camp and continuing this extraordinary journey together.
