A Powerful Message by an Israeli Conscientious Objector

Hadas Tal refused military service in Israel as a stance against the occupation. In this remarkable interview, held by Tamera co-worker and Palestinian peace worker A’ida al-Shibli at our cultural center in June, she speaks about what it is to grow up in a segregated apartheid state, about her experience as a conscientious objector within Israeli society, why she refused, how she came to break with Zionism, why the majority of Israelis supports the genocide in Gaza and crucially, why she sees the root causes of the ongoing violence as globally systemic, rather than about any particular group.

Listen to her responses to questions from the audience:

“How do you see the role of the military-industrial complex here in causing a never-ending war?”

“Something that happens a lot is that many wealthier people in Israel send their kids abroad to allow them to escape military service. What are your thoughts about this?”

“What’s your opinion about Hamas, the terror organization that isn’t innocent at all and the other side of this story?”
